The breast which is the symbol of femininity and fertility varies depending on genetic, geographic range and human physionomy. As the breasts occupy a specific area in the body of women, each woman would like to have beautiful breasts. Women may not always have congenital beautiful breasts or the breasts may deform due to some reasons such as giving birth, losing-gaining weight.

Sometimes, there may be significant asymmetry in both breasts. For these reasons, breast augmentation operation is one of the most applied procedures by surgeons for young and middle-aged people. Aim of the breast augmentation operation is to provide bigger, plumber and aesthetically more beautiful breasts.

The most suitable candidates for breast augmentation operation are those who do not have extraordinary expectations and know that this procedure is to provide a better look at the body. Breast augmentation aesthetic makes your appearance more beautiful, increases your self-confidence and helps you to look and feel better in society.

Aim of breast aesthetics is to provide the most suitable result for the expectations and body proportions of the patient. If your breasts are smaller than normal, you may be a suitable candidate for breast augmentation operation. In that case, it is possible to obtain bigger, aesthetically more beautiful breasts with interventions for augmentation and getting plump.

The new size of the breast is determined by taking desire of the person, body size and condition of the breast into account.

The material used for breast augmentation is silicone prosthesis. This prosthesis is resistant to high pressure and does not explode when exposed to pressure. It does not have a negative effect on breastfeeding.

There is a misconception that the prosthesis endures for a specific time and it should be replaced after a while. A patient underwent breast augmentation with breast prosthesis can use the prosthesis for lifelong unless there is a problem. Silicone prosthesis allowed to be used in USA by Food and Drug Administration is used.

Breast Augmentation Process

A person who wants to undergo a breast augmentation process, first of all, should find a reliable plastic surgeon and should be examined. During this meeting and examination, length, weight, body size, structure of the chest, size of the breasts, skin structure and breast gland are evaluated. These factors affect size of the breast, method, and result of the operation. The person should discuss the potential result in case of an operation with the physician.

For the cases where the breasts explicitly sag, the surgeon may recommend a method that decreases and reshapes the breast skin in addition to breast augmentation operation. During the first examination, your surgeon will explain the details regarding your condition such as the surgical method to be used, anesthesia method, what the surgeon can realistically achieve. Each year, thousands of breast augmentation operations are successfully carried out. However, you should have been informed about possible risks and related complications of the surgery. Post-op complications such as infection and limited hemostasia are rare and can be treated.

- Size of the Breasts

The most frequent question is about the size of the breasts after the operation. The size of the breast prosthesis to be placed is determined depending on the width and length of the chest, quality of the skin and position of the areola. There is not any aesthetically stable ideal breast size.

Another important issue is the bra sizes. Most of the bras sold in our country are called 70-75-80 etc. These numbers are the measures of the breast from the bottom of the breast and as the number increases, the size of the cup also increases. There are two parameters in some of the bras. Breast girth and size of the breast are evaluated separately. While around the chest is 75-80 etc. or 32-34 in inch, there are also cup sizes such A, B, C, D, E, F. For example, 85-size bra can have various sub-types such as 85A, 85B, 85C.

The ideal bra number should be like that. Because, if a patient having a wide chest has small breasts when this patient wears a 90-size bra, the bra doesn’t fit. The patient should use support. On the other hand bra size of the patient is 90 as if there as ideal breast size.

Breast augmentation operation does not change the breast girth of the patient. The operation changes the size of the bra. In other words, cup size which is A may be B, C, D, but if the breast girth is 80, it will stay 80.

Breast size is called “cup size” rather than bra size. While A cup represents the smallest breast structure, cup sizes increase gradually as B, C, D, E.

- Type of breast prosthesis:

The type, structure, and size of the breast prosthesis to be used can be determined during the first examination and operation planning. In that case, chest and breast structure, length of the patient and body type are very important. What is important is not using teardrop type prosthesis, if teardrop-shaped breast is aimed, it is important to obtain it. Those whose upper part of the breast is not plump cannot completely benefit from teardrop prosthesis. Therefore, the prosthesis should be according to the needing. Which prosthesis is better?  The answer to this question is that: the prosthesis which is suitable for the patient is better. It can be round or teardrop. The height of the prosthesis is determined according to lifting needs.

-Breast Augmentation Operation:

Breast augmentation operation is applied to enlarge typical small breasts or breasts which get smaller after giving birth. (It can also be applied to correct the asymmetry caused by reconstruction after mastectomy) The scope of the method is based on the desired change and physician’s opinion.

Breast augmentation operation can be performed under general or local anesthesia supported with sedation. The operation takes 1 - 2 hours on average depending on the intervention to be applied. Generally, hospitalization is not necessarily required.

There are a few surgical approaches used in breast augmentation. The most common techniques are the incision made slightly above the area where lower part of the breast and chest are combined and the semi-circle incision around the areola, made throughout the bottom border of the areola around the nipple. The method which is used rarely is axillary incision made in the armpit. The prosthesis may be placed under or above the muscle. The technique to be used is depending on the condition and preference of the patient. I apply all three methods by choosing the suitable one for the patient. I also evaluate choice of the patient.

After the operation, breasts are dressed and the bra is worn. After the operation, the pain can be taken under control with simple painkillers and stops within one or two days. If the prosthesis is placed under the muscle, mild muscle pain may be seen for about one week. It may be necessary to take prophylactic antibiotics for 5 days. The sutures are absorbable and do not require to be removed. After two weeks, if necessary, you will be recommended to be applied the instructed massage.

The person can get back to work after 3-5 days. The most important problem to be encountered after the operation is capsule formation around the prosthesis in the late stage. I place the prosthesis either under the muscle or under muscle fascia behind the mammary gland to eliminate this risk. So, it is possible to minimize the complication called capsular contracture.

As a result, it is possible to create plumber, bigger and more beautiful breasts with breast augmentation operation.
