What is gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts)?

Excess skin development unilaterally or bilateral in men and a feminine look is called gynecomastia.

Although this condition was thought to be seen rare, it has been found out with statistical evaluations that it is seen in 40% of the population.

Gynecomastia risk in puberty is 65% which is a high percentage.

Due to a small possibility of recovery after puberty, it should be waited for the treatment to be applied after puberty (generally after age of 18).

It is seen that most of the gynecomastia have significant trauma and negative effects on their social lives.

After the operation, such patients gain their self-confidence back and their social anxiety recover.

Physiological breast enlargement can be seen in newborns, during puberty, and in advanced age due to decrease in androgenic hormones.

Even though it may be caused by some medicines, tumors releasing hormone or liver diseases, it is generally idiopathic.

However, the reason for gynecomastia should be researched by endocrinology and if it caused by medications, it should wait for one year after the medicine is stopped and if the reduction is not enough, it is treated.

TREATMENT

If gynecomastia is not caused by any underlying disease or medicine, <405>it requires surgical treatment.</405>

It should be partially benefited from medication but adverse effects should be noted.

Surgical techniques used in gynecomastia operations are surgical removal of breast tissue or fat and/or Ultrasonic or LASER lipolysis.

Each breast can be reduced with one or two-incision.

Type and level of gynecomastia are determined after a physical examination and ultrasound imaging.

Type, level of gynecomastia and your social life are very important factors in determining the technique to be applied.

Surgical removal of breast tissue is applied under general anesthesia and lasts 2 hours.

It is performed through an incision under the nipple or through a small incision after LASER lipolysis under the breast.

Fat tissue in the breast and if any breast gland should be removed.

LASER Lipolysis is used to decrease skin sagging and looseness after the removal of breast tissue.

So that the procedure is performed with less scar in some of the patients with which the skin should be removed.
