Grinding of teeth, pathogenesis of grinding and results:

Our masticatory muscles are very strong muscles t grind the foods.

During mastication, temporal muscle starting from the temporal region and reaching temporomandibular joint and masseter muscle starting under the cheekbone and reaching edge of the jaw produce large strength. However, overworking of these muscles, i.e. clenching, may cause pressure on teeth and temporomandibular joint (temporomandibular).

This pressure degenerates the enamel of the teeth and causes loss in teeth. Also, cartilage surface damage on the joint is unavoidable. Chronic pain occurs in muscles and temporomandibular joint. Grinding due to psychological reasons are seen very often during the night or day.

Algorithm in teeth grinding treatment:

The aim of the treatment is to decrease pain in masticatory muscle, temporomandibular joint, to prevent loss in teeth and to protect the jaw.

For this reason, plaques can be applied by dentists. If there are psychological reasons, psychiatry consultation may be required. Treatment can be supported with muscle relaxing and antienflamatuars. Physical treatment can be applied.

Botulinum toxin use in teeth clenching treatment:

Botulinum toxin loosens the muscle which is applied. With this feature, teeth clenching strength can be decreased. Teeth clenching with less strength relaxes the joints and muscles.

The muscle which does not work gets smaller by time and long-lasting results can be obtained with repeated botulinum toxin applications. Relaxation can be provided for 2-6 months depending on the size of the muscle and strength of the clenching. The treatment can be more effective when combined with other treatment alternatives (dental splint, if necessary anxiolytic, physical rehabilitation...).
